Filled Donuts

while traveling from
Glendale to Woodland Hills
in California
I wandered into Masis Bakery Café
on Alameda
asking for something
for breakfast
that wasn’t too sloppy to eat
while driving
and had my first Ponchik
a delightful confection
filled with a cream custard
and served warm
perfect

when I Googled the name
I found out that
Wikipedia lists the names of
sweet fried filled pastries
from over 80 countries
world wide
if you add savories
the count is incredible

  1. I guess these are universal. I love all kinds of filled things, both sweet and savory.

  2. I loved filled pastries as a child -- eclairs, cream puffs.
Now I have to stay with stuffed vegetables. I gain weight just reading this blog...
Anyway, leave the gun. Take the cannoli.

  3. Vinegared dishes are called sunomono as su means vinegar in Japanese.
Sunomono has a refreshing taste and goes with many types of dishes.
It's a good side dish or an appetizer to serve in a Japanese-style meal.
Sunomono also helps to enhance appetite.

There are mainly three types of vinegar dressings for sunomono:

    •Ama-zu (sweet vinegar mixture)
    Vinegar / Sugar / Salt
Mix and heat 2 parts vinegar, 1 part sugar, and some salt.

    •Nibai-zu
    Vinegar / Soy Sauce
Mix equal amounts of vinegar and soy sauce.

    •Sanbai-zu
Vinegar / Soy Sauce / Mirin or Sugar
Mix and heat equal amounts of seasonings. *The amount of sugar is about one third of mirin.

Dashi stock is often added in nibai-zu and sanbai-zu to soften the flavor.
Adjust the amounts of seasonings, depending on your preference and ingredients.

Common ingredients for sunomono are vegetables and seafood.
